33F, lake effect snow showers. Headed out from home. Not the first ride of the year, but first ride of February. Took the MTB with the good snow tires that came in handy here and there. Ski tomorrow.

Well, spring is here and we've had our first race of 2010.
Temps rose up to 50F, the sun came out from behind the clouds, but the wind was HOWLING from off Lake Michigan, so that kept things cool. About 200+ racers competed on a .7 mile closed course in a Kenosha industrial park in various categories.
So, we're off and running in a new cycling season!

First "real" ride of the year. It ended up being a back-to-back bike comparison. Started solo on my Trek 2200 (beater) for about 30 km. The front brifter decided to pack it in (residual crash damage), so I decided to go home and switch to the Cannondale.
Two things became immediately became obvious:
I looove the ride of a carbon frame, especially when potholes are numerous; and the Fizik seat (Arione) on the C'dale is much more comfortable.
I quickly pumped up the tires and switched the remaining bottle, but was still late for meeting two friends for a group ride. I got lucky and was able to catch the small group of now 4 riders, without knowing the route.
About 1.5 hrs into my ride I decided it was time to eat the waffles. As I was wrestling them out of their ziploc bag with full-finger gloves I dropped the lot on the road. No food and 1.5 bottles of water is not enough for a 3 hr (90 km) ride. I ate two dinners to make up for lost calories.
I love riding right after ski season. It's about the only time I can ride away from my non-skiing cycling friends.

Five days into post-op for hernia. It is going to be a couple of weeks before I can get into the saddle. Having a tough enough time getting in and out of bed.

Cycling was once my only focus. After I got married it was harder to find time to train every day and my wife would say things like,"you don't go out and ride as much anymore". Remarks like that made me feel guilty, like I was looking for an excuse not to train. What she didn't understand was that the group training rides I usually participated in didn't wait at the top of the hills, so once you started loosing your form it wasn't as much fun. I enjoyed the competition more than just doing miles. Over time I returned to a normal life and stopped checking my resting heart rate, and that sort of thing. I do still ride some and will increase now that I have found some inspiration. I'm going to do more XC classic races. They are a good excuse to take a short weekend trip somewhere.
Hey, the real reason I'm responding is to ask how you insert a picture into your posting? |
